Five-hundred years ago, Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the Castle Church’s door in Wittenberg and triggered a ripple effect that would forever change the course of religious history.
Although the official date isn’t until the 31st of October, Germany celebrates this revolutionary act, and the man behind it, throughout the year with all sorts of cultural and historical events.
This includes the Luther 500 Festival, which will take you on a tour of Wittenberg (the center, of course, of the Reformation), Eisleben (birthplace and death place of Martin Luther), Wartburg castle in Eisenach (Luther’s hiding place from 1521 to 1522), Erfurt (where he studied), Torgau, and Leipzig.
I love these suggestions! Definitely plan on visiting Canada at least for a weekend trip this year, seems a shame not to given the celebrations in place, and India is high on my list! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Thank you Jen! I’d love to take a trip to Canada soon too. It’s been on my list for ages now 🙂
First off great round up of some great cultural destinations to visit this year! I’m so thrilled to live in Canada and to be celebrating our 150th this year with so many cultural events throughout the country. Secondly, thanks so much for the mention. I feel we need to travel our own backyard, learn its history and by so will not only appreciate our own home country but also better appreciate the same in other countries on our travels.
Thank you Stephanie and I had to feature that blog post of yours 😀 I might not make it to Canada in time for the 150th so maybe for the 151st I’ll pay a visit 🙂
This post is amazing, I definitely have a few more places on my list now! Thank you for your insight, and cheers for including some non-Western cultural destinations!!
Thank you so much Lynn! If only we had the time to visit all! 🙂
Just added a few new places on to my list! Thanks for this post. I have never heard of quite a few places on here.
Thank you Claire! Our lists tend to grow bigger every year 🙂
It’s so nice to read something like this in a sea of travel reviews and guides. Refreshing really to see something more meaningful. And I love the concept as well, to travel for more reasons than to just say you’ve been there. We strongly believe in heading out in the world to find inspiration and wonder in the way other people live. Thank you so much for writing about this!
Thank you Stephanie! I think we need to look at travel as a way to see/understand the other and not just how we benefit from it. Saturated as the travel industry is, I prefer to focus on experiences rather than bucket lists 🙂
Hey Sandra, Thanks for mention! Will be sharing this post on Twitter!
You’re welcome Nina and thank you! Your post was a breath of fresh air among all the “is it safe to travel to Rwanda” blog posts out there 🙂
