Win a coloring book with original illustrations by Azorean artists

The instructions on how to enter this giveaway are at the end of the blog post.

The Azores aren’t just the most beautiful place on earth (to me, at least), they’re also a never-ending source of inspiration for artists. The downside of living in a remote archipelago in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, despite all that envy-inducing beauty, is, well, remoteness.

When I attended the 6th edition of the Azores Fringe Festival last May, I wasn’t surprised that only a few of the artists made a living off their art. While some of them are more attracted to the creative process than the final product itself, thus not paying so much importance to earn an income, others regretted the lack of financial support, courage, and time to pursue their artistic careers. Some, if not most, would simply like to keep their creative outlet as such, and I respect that.

But for those who lack the financial support, courage, and time to pursue their artistic careers, remoteness is both a curse and a gift. Remoteness gives a uniqueness to their art, forcing them to be resourceful and inventive at all times, but it can also withdraw them from opportunities to showcase their work that might simply be one flight too far.

I agree that not all art is innovative, or a breakthrough, or worthy of changing History curriculums over it. That is fine. Most of the times, artists are just expressing themselves. That’s it. This is when local organizations like MiratecArts come in and work to make a difference.

The book “Ilustrar Açores” (translated, “Illustrate the Azores”) is the result of four years of hard work, a collection of original illustrations that Azorean-born and Azorean-based artists made between 2014 and 2018. I was thrilled to be at the official launch in Lisbon on July 11th and even more thrilled to have the book in my hands for the first time. I’m proud of another “family” project. The energy I felt there and later at dinner is the same I feel when I travel to the Azores for the Fringe Festival.

I bought a few copies of the book with my friends’ children and nephews and nieces in mind; it is, after all, a coloring book. But then the adults wanted a copy too; not to color, but to keep. So I gave away my remaining copies, except for two — one for myself and the one I’m giving away to a lucky reader. If one of Tripper’s core values is supporting local artists, what better use is there to give to this platform?
